This collection brings together reproductions of Antoine van Dyck (1599–1641), also known as Anthony van Dyck in English and Antoon van Dyck in Dutch. Court portraits, Genoese aristocrats, families, children, self-portraits and religious scenes reveal the versatility of a Flemish painter who became a major reference in seventeenth-century European portraiture.

From Antwerp to Rubens’s studio

Born in Antwerp in 1599, Van Dyck was producing independent works as early as 1615–1616 and became a master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1618. During his early years, he worked in the circle of Peter Paul Rubens, whose art influenced his compositions, movement and palette.

Self-Portrait introduces the collection with an image of the artist himself. A draughtsman and engraver as well as a painter, Van Dyck began building a career early on in which portraits and religious commissions developed in parallel.

Italy and Genoese portraits

Between 1621 and 1627, Van Dyck stayed in Italy. He travelled in particular to Genoa, Rome, Venice and Palermo, studied the Italian masters and took a particular interest in Titian. In Genoa, patrician families commissioned portraits from him to affirm their status.

Charles I and the English court

After returning to Antwerp, Van Dyck settled at the English court in 1632 as portraitist to Charles I. His depictions of the king, Queen Henrietta Maria, their children and courtiers established a lasting model for British aristocratic portraiture.

Portrait of Charles I emphasises stature and self-command. King Charles I of England offers another image of the sovereign. For a cohesive display, these portraits can be paired according to pose, costume or symbols of power.

Henrietta Maria and the royal children

Queen Henrietta Maria with Sir Jeffrey Hudson combines a court portrait with the relationship between several figures. Satin fabrics, jewellery and gestures create an official image while preserving a certain sense of intimacy between the sitters.

Princesses Elizabeth and Anne belongs to the extensive group devoted to the children of Charles I. Children’s portraits are distinguished by their relationships of scale, clothing and the way the painter adapts dynastic conventions of representation to young sitters.

Couples, families and double portraits

Van Dyck developed portraits in which two or more people engage with one another through their gaze, gestures or positioning. William II, Prince of Orange, and his Fiancée Mary Stuart connects individual representation with dynastic alliance.

Married couples, brothers, sisters, mothers and children make it possible to create a wall gallery centred on family relationships. Horizontal or nearly square formats are particularly well suited to these multi-figure compositions.

Portraits of men, diplomats and artists

Van Dyck’s clientele was not limited to families royal. Nobles, collectors, diplomats, clerics and artists pose before him. Cesare Alessandro Scaglia, Abbot of Staffarda recalls the diplomatic and religious networks through which commissions circulated.

Portraits in armour, black cloaks or ecclesiastical dress demonstrate his ability to differentiate between materials. The face and hands often concentrate the expression, while clothing and accessories indicate the sitter’s status.

Religious painting

Van Dyck also created numerous religious compositions. The Arrest of Christ builds tension through converging movements, luminous contrasts and the proximity of the figures.

The Virgin and Child with Saint Catherine of Alexandria presents a calmer register. Crucifixions, lamentations, saints and episodes from the Passion complete this facet of the collection.

Workshop, school and copy works

The catalogue also includes works identified as originating from the school or workshop of Anthony van Dyck. This distinction should be retained: it differentiates a work attributed directly to the painter from a composition created by his circle, a collaborator or a follower.
