This collection brings together reproductions of paintings, watercolours and drawings by Félix Ziem (1821–1911). Venice, Constantinople, Martigues, Marseille, the Camargue, northern ports and travel sketchbooks make up a body of work dominated by water, sky and shifting light.

A 19th-century travelling painter

Born in Beaune, Ziem trained in drawing and architecture before travelling throughout Europe and the Mediterranean basin. The Musée d’Orsay documents his stays in Russia, Italy, Holland, England, Barbizon, Venice, Martigues, Nice and Paris. His journeys inspired plein-air sketches, which he later developed into compositions in the studio.

Tobolsk, Siberia, Sailing Ships at Sunset, Holland and View of Rome towards the Vatican demonstrate the catalogue’s geographical scope.

Venice, lagoon and architecture

Venice became his most celebrated subject. Ziem varied his views of the Grand Canal, the Doge’s Palace, Giudecca, San Giorgio Maggiore, the Molo and the French gardens. Venice, the Grand Canal at Sunrise favours the morning light, while Venice, Giudecca at Twilight relies on an end-of-day effect.

Gondola and Sailing Ships before the Doge’s Palace and San Giorgio Maggiore brings together several characteristic motifs: architecture, boats and reflections. The Musée d’Orsay holds a large View of Venice acquired at the 1852 Salon.

Martigues, Marseille and the light of southern France

Ziem also worked around Martigues, Marseille, Sausset, Antibes and the Camargue. Return of the Fishermen to Martigues combines harbour activity and landscape, while The Port of Marseille at Sunset structures the composition around a luminous effect.

Flight of Pink Flamingos, Vaccarès Lagoon and The Camargue, Sunset turn the viewer’s gaze towards the lagoons and wildlife of southern France.

Constantinople and the Orientalist imagination

Views of Constantinople, the Bosphorus, Cairo and other locations belong to 19th-century European Orientalism. They combine travel observations, memories and the expectations of a Western audience drawn to an imagined “Orient”. They should therefore be understood as artistic constructions of their time, rather than neutral documents of the societies they depict.

Constantinople, the Sultan’s Caïque, The Bosphorus in the Morning and Street in Old Cairo allow comparisons between a nautical scene, a landscape and an urban setting.

Water, sky and atmospheric effects

The Petit Palais highlights the predominant role of water and sky in Ziem’s renown. Dawn, twilight, moonlight, mist and festivities transform the same site. The Feast of the Assumption in Venice, the Cannon Shot adds a ceremonial and animated dimension to the landscape.

To create a series, several views of Venice can be paired by time of day, or ports from different regions can be brought together around the same palette of blues, oranges and yellows.

Less expected works

Ziem also created forest landscapes, portraits, copies after the Dutch masters and still lifes. The Forest of Fontainebleau near Barbizon recalls his links with the Barbizon painters, while Still Life with Pumpkin reveals another side of his work.
