François Boucher, Painter of French Rococo

François Boucher (1703-1770), born and died in Paris, was one of the leading French painters during the reign of Louis XV. A painter, draughtsman and engraver, he developed a repertoire encompassing mythology, pastorals, landscapes, genre scenes, portraits and religious subjects.

Admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in the early 1730s, he worked for the Crown and for major patrons, including Madame de Pompadour. In 1765, he became First Painter to the King and director of the Royal Academy.
