Henri Martin, Painter of Light and Quercy

Henri Martin (1860-1943) was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work brought together landscapes, figures, Symbolist subjects and large-scale public decorations. Born in Toulouse, he received a city scholarship in 1879 to study at the École des beaux-arts de Paris. A stay in Italy subsequently enriched his exploration of light and colour.

Our collection brings together reproductions of his landscapes of the Lot, his gardens at Marquayrol, his views of Labastide-du-Vert and Collioure, as well as portraits, rural scenes, muses and preparatory studies.

A divided brushstroke between Symbolism and Post-Impressionism

Henri Martin’s painting is recognisable by its fragmented brushstrokes and colour harmonies. This approach divides colour without following a uniform formula: it can depict vibrant sunlight, mist, twilight or light filtering through a garden. His poetic subjects and muse figures also connect part of his work with Symbolism.

The Muses and The Three Muses illustrate this allegorical dimension, while his landscapes of the Lot reveal close observation of the seasons and times of day.

Marquayrol, an open-air studio

The acquisition of the Marquayrol estate at Labastide-du-Vert in 1900 marked a major turning point. Henri Martin worked there for several months each year, transforming the garden, ponds, arbour, trees and surrounding views into recurring motifs. These works allow us to follow the same place through different lighting conditions and compositions.

Discover in particular Marquayrol, the Pond with Thuja Trees, Beneath the Great Horse Chestnut at Marquayrol and The Arbour at the North-West Corner of Marquayrol Park.

Labastide-du-Vert and the Lot Valley

The church, bridge, river, houses and inhabitants of Labastide-du-Vert form another essential group. Henri Martin returned to these motifs in spring, summer and at twilight. Repetition did not produce copies: each painting explores an atmosphere, a season or a viewpoint.

The Church of Labastide-du-Vert on a Summer Morning, General View of Labastide-du-Vert from the Top of Marquayrol Park and The Bridge at Labastide-du-Vert make it possible to compare these variations.

Collioure, Marseille and Mediterranean Landscapes

The catalogue is not limited to the Quercy. The ports, boats, sea walls and coastal houses offered Henri Martin sharper contrasts and a different quality of light. For a seaside-inspired interior, explore Boats at Collioure, The Tower of Collioure, Moonrise or The Old Port of Marseille.

Figures, Portraits and Spiritual Subjects

Henri Martin also painted isolated figures, portraits, family scenes and religious subjects. His figures may be treated as intimate studies or placed within a more ambitious decorative composition. Self-Portrait with a White Beard, Christ and the Samaritaine and Saint Francis of Assisi show this diversity.

Rural Work and Grand Decorative Schemes

Scenes of work, peasants, shepherds and harvesters occupy an important place in his oeuvre. These scenes are consistent with his decorative commissions and with the civic themes of his time. The Fertiliser Sprayer and The Harvester give rural figures a monumental presence.

The collection also includes studies connected with public decorations, such as Couple Walking, Study for The Luxembourg Gardens and Study for the War Memorial.

Choosing a Reproduction by Henri Martin

For a bright, botanical atmosphere, choose the gardens of Marquayrol and the landscapes of Labastide-du-Vert. Views of Collioure and Marseille suit spaces inspired by the sea. Muses, portraits and figure studies create a more narrative focal point, while rural scenes bring a calm, earthy tone.
