From Turčianske Teplice to Prague and Bratislava
Born in Turčianske Teplice, Galanda studied in Budapest between 1914 and 1916, then in Prague between 1922 and 1927. His training and work as an illustrator led him to explore painting, drawing and the graphic arts alike. Self-Portrait introduces the collection through the artist’s own likeness.

Between 1930 and 1932, Galanda and Fulla published Private Letters, regarded by the Slovak National Gallery as an essential manifesto of the country’s pictorial avant-garde. They defended the autonomy of the painting, line, colour and form against a literal imitation of reality.
This position helps explain Play of Forms: the subject remains perceptible, but the visual arrangement acquires its own logic. Galanda does not simply copy a traditional motif; he seeks a modern language capable of expressing a Slovak experience.
Mothers, Children and Madonnas

The bandits form another notable group. Bandits transforms a figure drawn from the Slovak imagination through simplified volumes and expressive tension. Lumberjacks, emigrants, poor families and villagers extend the work towards labour, displacement and vulnerability.
Poor Family shows how Galanda reduces the scene to its essential relationships. The modern language does not erase emotion; it concentrates it.
