About the artwork

Discover the story behind this artwork

The artwork titled "Arbousier" by Robert John Thornton is a botanical illustration that reflects the growing interest in nature and sciences in the 18th century. Thornton, an English physician and botanist, published a monumental work, "The Temple of Flora," which was praised for its finesse and attention to detail. In this piece, he depicts the strawberry tree, a Mediterranean tree whose fruits are both beautiful and edible. Thornton's style is characterized by a realistic approach, where each leaf and fruit is rendered with remarkable precision. This artwork is not only a testament to biodiversity but also an example of the aesthetic of the period, where nature was celebrated for its beauty. Today, this piece finds a special resonance in interior decoration, bringing a touch of freshness and natural charm, ideal for contemporary spaces.
