About Elizabeth Grant Bankson Beatty and Her Daughter Susan
Joshua Johnson painted this double portrait around 1805 in Baltimore. The Art Institute of Chicago identifies the sitters as Elizabeth Grant Bankson Beatty, Mrs. James Beatty, and her daughter Susan. This oil on canvas measures 82.9 × 72.8 cm and is numbered 1998.315.

Elizabeth wears a dark short-sleeved dress with a gathered bodice and a double circlet of glass beads in her brown hair. Susan sits beside her in a high-waisted white muslin gown. The child holds a brightly coloured strawberry, a motif the museum notes in several of Johnson’s portraits.
An American portrait in Chicago
