Emilie Amerling on Her Sickbed – Friedrich von Amerling
Emilie Amerling is shown close up, reclining against a pale pillow. A white bonnet frames her face and is fastened beneath her chin with red ribbons. Warm light concentrates on the face, while the bedclothes and garment are rendered with broad, visible brushstrokes.
The Wien Museum attributes this oil on canvas to Friedrich von Amerling and identifies the sitter as Emilie Amerling, née Heinrich, the artist’s third wife. The proposed date of 1872 is marked as uncertain. The canvas measures 44.5 × 36.6 cm and has inventory number 43804.
The inscription “Emilie Amerling + 1880” appears near the lower edge. Emilie Heinrich (1837–1880) married Friedrich von Amerling in 1857. The close framing and freely handled paint give this family portrait a direct quality without secondary setting.
