Gigartina purpurascens in fruit by Anna Atkins
A finely branching seaweed spreads like a pale fan across the cyanotype’s deep blue. Its numerous fruiting tips form a delicate network around a central holdfast. At the foot of the plate, Anna Atkins wrote the label “Gigartina purpurascens. in fruit.” by hand.
A botanical photogram from about 1846
The British Library catalogues this plate as a cyanotype negative photogram of an algae specimen on paper watermarked “J Whatman Turkey Mill 1846”. Made around 1846, it belongs to Anna Atkins’s work on British algae. The specimen was placed directly on light-sensitive paper and exposed to light without a camera.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
