About Graduation
Harrison Fisher created Graduation for the June 1903 cover of the Ladies’ Home Journal. Signed and dated at lower right, the original combines pencil, watercolour and tempera on paper laid on board and measures about 18.5 × 13.75 inches.
A procession in white
A group of young women advances in white high-necked dresses and large hats. Some lift their skirts as the figures follow one another against a lively green background. Brown shoes and restrained touches of pink punctuate the pale palette.
A magazine illustration
This is not an oil painting of graduates wearing caps and holding diplomas. It was designed as a magazine cover: Fisher focuses attention on clothing, posture and the collective movement of the young women.
