Moorish Bath, Study was painted by Jean-Léon Gérôme in the 1870s for the finished composition of The Moorish Bath. It is one of at least four known pencil or oil studies devoted to the bather’s complex pose.
In the privacy of a bath, the woman appears to have completed her washing while an attendant prepares a final palm-oil scrub. Gérôme carefully develops the back, face, and twist of the body. The thin glazes in the background and attendant contrast with the more highly finished principal figure.
This oil on canvas measures 70.5 × 54 cm. Choose this reproduction to observe Gérôme’s working process and the light across the skin, wall, and floor, or explore more Jean-Léon Gérôme reproductions.
