Art print — The Piano Lesson (1916) — Henri Matisse

The Piano Lesson, painted in Issy-les-Moulineaux in late summer 1916 and held by MoMA, depicts Pierre Matisse, then sixteen years old, at the piano. The female figure behind him is not a teacher: she is Woman on a High Stool, a Matisse painting hanging in the room. The sculpture in the foreground is also by Matisse, while the green triangle suggests the landscape outside. This work is distinct from The Music Lesson (1917), a more naturalistic portrait of the Matisse family.

The strength of The Piano Lesson lies in its sober palette and rigorous composition. Matisse skillfully plays with shapes and colors to structure the space: the black arch of the piano, the green walls, the bare floor, and the precisely framed window create an almost abstract scene, where classical perspective fades in favor of modern visual purity. This work marks a turning point in Matisse’s style, exploring here a modern classicism, pure and thoughtful, characteristic of his mature period.
