About Jacob Munch’s Self-Portrait
Held by the National Museum in Oslo as NG.M.02414, this Self-Portrait by Jacob Munch is an oil on canvas made before 1839. It measures 52.5 × 45 cm. Jacob Munch (1776–1839) was a Norwegian officer and painter, best known as a portraitist of the Empire period.
A direct, carefully constructed portrait
The artist depicts himself half-length and slightly turned, looking towards the viewer. His short brown hair, sideburns, dark coat and high white neckcloth place the portrait in the early decades of the nineteenth century.
Hand, face and dark background
The right hand held across the chest echoes the illuminated face. The spare brown-green background isolates the figure, brings out the blue eyes and focuses attention on the sitter’s presence.

Our frames measure 1.7 cm on each side. For a 40x60 cm painting, the total framed size is therefore 43.4 x 63.4 cm.
Canvas 100% polyester (285 g/m²), UV-resistant and solvent-free inks, safe for children and allergy sufferers. The canvases are mounted on a 2 cm thick wooden frame (4 cm for very large formats).
