Sunset at Pourville, Open Sea: Monet’s evening colours

Painted in 1882, Sunset at Pourville, Open Sea by Claude Monet reduces the landscape to two elements: sky and sea. A horizon line crosses the composition. Above it, long strokes of pink, mauve, yellow and blue-green mingle; below, shorter strokes suggest the water’s movement and the reflections of the sky.

Light becomes the subject of the landscape

No figure or boat holds the attention. The eye moves freely between areas of colour without being directed towards a narrative scene. The warm shades of the sky reappear in the waves, where they sit alongside stronger greens and blues. This repetition connects the two parts of the painting while preserving the distinction between atmosphere and the surface of the water.

The brushmarks remain visible. In the sky, their elongated movement follows the breadth of the horizon; in the sea, they break into smaller strokes and create a tighter rhythm. From a distance, the whole forms a luminous landscape. Up close, the small variations that build this impression become apparent.

A view of the Normandy coast in 1882

Sotheby’s catalogue entry documents this oil on canvas, signed and dated 1882, under the title Coucher de soleil à Pourville, pleine mer. It describes the light remaining after the sun has passed below the horizon. Here, Monet explores the relationship between the colours of the sky and those of the sea in a particularly pared-down composition.
