The Last Communion of Saint Louis – Ary Scheffer

Inside a tent, King Louis IX, dressed in white and marked with red crosses, receives communion. A priest and several companions surround him in a solemn scene.

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art dates this oil on canvas to 1823. The work measures 46.36 × 38.74 cm and has accession number M.2000.179.38.

The scene depicts the final moments of Louis IX, known as Saint Louis, during the Eighth Crusade. This freely painted oil sketch is held at LACMA in the Ciechanowiecki Collection.
