About Le Goûter

Le Goûter is a colour print by Louis-Marin Bonnet after a composition by Pierre-Antoine Baudouin. The National Gallery of Art holds this impression in the Widener Collection as accession 1942.9.2202. The sheet measures 32.4 × 25.1 cm and is catalogued as colour stipple, state II of II.

An afternoon snack in a garden

A woman in blue sits beside a child in pink, facing a man in a red coat. A turbaned servant brings cups to the table. The group occupies an architectural garden among trees, flowers and a tall columned structure. The original French title refers to a light afternoon snack rather than breakfast.

Colour and detail

The coloured stipple renders fabrics, foliage and skin tones with fine detail. Blue, pink and red separate the figures from the vegetation, while smaller motifs extend the scene towards the edges. The attribution, medium, dimensions and state are documented by the National Gallery of Art.
