The Violet Seller – Franz Secky

An elderly woman is shown half-length, turned slightly to the left. A white headscarf surrounds her face, while very dark clothing stands against a brown background worked with broad strokes. Her right hand holds a small bunch of violets with green leaves.

This oil on canvas is catalogued as The Violet Seller and dated 1927. It is attributed to the Austrian painter Franz Secky. A painted inscription with the artist’s abbreviated name and the year appears at the lower left.

Franz Secky (Vienna, 1895–1950) studied in Munich and Weimar under Albin Egger-Lienz. The contrast between the dark areas, pale face and few colours of the flowers focuses attention on the seller and her gesture.
