About The Wind illustration
Pierre Pinsard created The Wind in 1929 for the first edition of Blaise Cendrars’s Little Black Stories for Little White Children, published in Paris by Au Sans Pareil. The book contains fifty original woodcuts by Pinsard, so this image belongs to print illustration rather than Impressionist painting.
Forms swept into motion
Broad, winding bands of ochre and grey cross the cream ground. Black silhouettes — fish, a leaf and spiral forms — appear to be caught in their flow. The contrast between dark shapes and sprayed colour, together with the curving directions, makes the wind visible without depicting the air itself.
An original woodcut serving the story
Simplified outlines, white incisions and a restricted palette suit the expressive language of woodcut. Pinsard turns an invisible phenomenon into graphic rhythm. Removed from the page, the illustration retains the immediate clarity and narrative energy devised for Cendrars’s book.
