This British Second World War poster belongs to the “To the Merchant Navy: Thank You!” campaign. Harold Forster depicts two smiling merchant seamen coming ashore and giving the thumbs-up. In the foreground, one wears a dark cap and smokes a pipe, while his companion appears behind him on the dockside.
Ships, cranes, cargo and the Red Ensign place the scene in a working port. The message thanks the crews who kept Britain’s maritime supply routes operating during the conflict. The Australian War Memorial dates this offset lithograph to circa 1939–1945 and records the British Merchant Navy, H.M. Stationery Office and London printer Henry Hildesley Ltd among its makers.
