Death on Subs!, an official U.S. Navy poster
Illustrated by Jon Whitcomb and published in 1943 by Lutz & Sheinkman for the U.S. Navy’s Industrial Incentive Division, this Second World War poster addressed manufacturers of equipment for destroyer escorts. Its message frames the Battle of the Atlantic as a race against time.
The destroyer escort DE-280
The massive bow of DE-280 cuts through a dark-blue sea as a white explosion rises to starboard and a convoy appears on the horizon. Built at the Boston Navy Yard in 1943, the vessel was transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS Kingsmill (K 484).
A call to meet production deadlines
The yellow panel reproduces a dispatch signed by Rear Admiral E. L. Cochrane, Chief of the Bureau of Ships. It urges workers not to keep the destroyer escorts, described as “wolfhounds”, waiting against the German U-boat wolf packs, and ends by asking them to make every part on time.
