A late work by Parmigianino
Parmigianino painted Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene about 1535–1540. Held by the J. Paul Getty Museum as 2017.22, it is painted in oil on several sheets of paper laid down on panel and measures 75.9 × 59.7 cm.
Unconventional iconography
Seated at right in a pink dress and blue mantle, the Virgin holds Christ by the wrist. The Child turns away from her to embrace his cousin John the Baptist, whose hands are joined in prayer. Mary Magdalene supports Christ between them. Once mistaken for Saint Catherine, she is identified by the pearls and toilette stiletto in the foreground and by her bodily assumption in the heavenly light at upper left.
Mannerism in a lush landscape
Elongated figures, expressive hands and shimmering textiles characterise Parmigianino’s mature style. The sacred group is divided between three closely linked figures at left and the isolated Virgin at right. Behind them, trees open onto a blue valley, while the meticulously smooth paint surface has an almost enamel-like finish.
