This collection brings together reproductions of paintings, drawings and lithographs by Édouard Vuillard (1868–1940). Family interiors, couture workshops, portraits, theatre, gardens and Parisian scenes reveal an artist who brings figures, settings and patterns together without establishing any hierarchy between people and their surroundings.

Vuillard and the Nabis group

In 1889, Vuillard joined the Nabis group, alongside Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Paul Sérusier and Paul Ranson. The Musée d’Orsay highlights the strength of his framing, colours and compositions, which sometimes approach abstraction. Interior with Pink Wallpaper III shows how the pattern of the wall can almost absorb the depth of the room.

The term “intimist” is often used to describe his domestic scenes, but they should not be reduced to a simply gentle atmosphere. Partially concealed figures, colour contrasts, compressed space and repeated patterns also create ambiguity and tension.

Home, family and the couture workshop

Vuillard’s mother ran a corset workshop in the apartments where the family lived. Daily work, fabrics and sewing gestures therefore became essential subjects. Women Sewing, Two Workers in the Couture Workshop and The Seamstress allow several treatments of the same world to be compared.

In Figures in an Interior — Intimacy, bodies almost merge with furniture, draperies and wallpaper. This visual principle gives domestic spaces a density that extends beyond anecdote.

Wallpaper, lamps and the construction of space

Vuillard transforms domestic objects into compositional elements. A pendant light can organise an entire room; wallpaper can bring the foreground and background closer together. The Metropolitan Museum even compares some of Vuillard’s lithographs with Hiroshige’s framing and overprinting.

Madame Vuillard Beneath the Green Pendant Light places light at the centre of the space, while The Pink Bedroom builds its atmosphere through colour and the repetition of surfaces.

Theatre, La Revue blanche and the Natanson circle

Vuillard worked at the Théâtre de l’Œuvre as a set designer and co-founder. His experience of the stage influenced his compositions: rooms become sets and those close to him seem to take on roles. Wings at the Théâtre de l’Œuvre refers directly to this milieu.

He also spent time with Thadée and Misia Natanson around La Revue blanche. Thadée Natanson in His Study, La Revue blanche and Misia and Vallotton at Villeneuve document this artistic and intellectual network.

Gardens, streets and large-scale decorative works

Vuillard was not limited to small interiors. He also designed large decorative ensembles for residences and, later, for institutions. Public Gardens develops a vision in which strollers, trees and paths function as a continuous setting.

The Tuileries Garden in Paris and Café Wepler shifts his focus to the urban environment. However, the compositions retain the same attention to the relationships between people, furniture, vegetation and architecture.

Portraits and Modern Life

After the First World War, Vuillard produced numerous portraits of actresses, writers, industrialists and members of his circle. The Musée d’Orsay recalls his approach: he did not simply paint a face, but people in their own homes. Study for the Portrait of Countess Anna de Noailles and Yvonne Printemps in Her Dressing Room thus bring together the sitter, the setting and signs of modern life.

Landscapes and Stays Outside Paris

Saint-Jacut, Vasouy, Honfleur, Cannes and the properties of his close friends and family offered other subjects. The Beach at Saint-Jacut shows that his explorations of colour masses and composition continued beyond the city.

Choosing an Édouard Vuillard Reproduction

A richly layered interior suits a library, dining room or office. Gardens and landscapes create a greater sense of space. To form a cohesive grouping, pair two works by subject—sewing, lamps, wallpaper or gardens—or by colour palette.

For the poster option, the print is produced on 140 g paper with HD rendering at 150 DPI, preserving crisp details and legible colours both up close and from a distance. Dimensions, canvas and framing options vary according to the artwork, format and destination. The product page displays only the variants that are actually available.
